Asian carp are largely considered public enemy #1 when it comes to invasive species in the United States. Here, we track their decades-long colonization of the Mississippi River basin and the potential threat they pose to the Great Lakes – documenting fishermen, scientists, chefs, politicians and everyday folks whose lives Asian carp have affected. The project was shot in 4 weeks while travelling through 8 states.

Belle Isle Revealed

Filmed over the course of one year using HDSLR cameras, Belle Isle Revealed tells the story of Belle Isle’s often overlooked natural habitat and abundant wildlife. As Detroit’s largest city park, Belle Isle is iconic and meaningful to many people in southeast Michigan. Much of the park has steadily deteriorated due to lack of resources, but a core group of volunteers, scientists and activists are working hard to preserve its threatened ecosystem.

A Marine Family

The Shattucks were recently married when Al left for Iraq in 2006; Erin was expecting. In the fog of war – joining countless ranks of others – a family was born.

Three years passed.

The Shattuck family grew, their lives changed, and the familiarity of country life established itself. In their new house dolls and dogs became familiar sights. Military mementos were hard to come by, yet military service was always a reality.

As middle east wars continue, the 1/24 Marine Reserves may be called into action again. Al Shattuck may yet go to Afghanistan, this time leaving behind his first born son.

Christ Child House

The boys at Christ Child House on Detroit’s west side are part of Michigan’s foster care system and its more than 6,000 legal orphans. As they wait to be reunified with families or adopted, they share tears and tantrums, giggles and hugs, uncertain futures and some surprisingly happy endings.

Free Press photographer Kathleen Galligan was the catalyst for this project, spending over three years at the boys home to document life through photography. Brian Kaufman spent one year shooting video there. The project led to the adoption of several children at Christ Child House and received local and national attention. It was the recipient of a national Emmy award and a Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism.

Snow Creek Adventure

Snow Creek – AKA the north face of Mt. San Jacinto – is a classic southern California mountaineering route. Having lived in the mountain range for 18 years, my brother and I thought it was finally time to check this climb off the list. To conserve weight, I took only one point-n-shoot camera – the Canon Powershot SD960 IS, and a small voice recorder. Everything is this video is shot with that camera other than a few stills from my brother’s camera.

The Mower Gang

“Winning Detroit’s Other Turf War” – the motto of The Mower Gang sums up their mission – to revive public land that is no longer maintained. The group’s first project was a one-day assault on the Dorais velodrome, Detroit’s once pristine bicycle racing track that sat abandoned for 20 years.

Peabody Ice Climbing

Ice climbing in Michigan used to involve an 8 hour drive (from Detroit) to the south shore of Lake Superior. Elevation has always been our problem – until now. Peabody ice climbing has made a lot of local climbers extremely happy. The long-held belief that all climbers are bums has been busted again through the ingenuity of Peabody.

Carrier of the Economy

Through the eyes of a postal carrier, economic downturns can be measured through the types of mail that people receive: bank notices, lawyer advertisements, certified letters and the list goes on. John Dick has seen it all for years and knows that mail is an indicator of the economy.
