DESCRIPTION: In 2008 the Detroit Free Press published a story detailing how Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick lied under oath during a whistleblower trial. The bombshell report was followed by months of political turmoil that ended in a guilty plea from Kilpatrick. Reporters M.L. Elrick, Jim Schaefer and other Detroit Free Press staff were awarded a Pulitzer Prize for the coverage.
PRODUCTION: The downfall of Detroit’s mayor began within the first year of my living in Detroit and working for the Detroit Free Press. The story consumed much of my time for a year as I produced dozens of daily-turn videos on deadline. With a federal corruption case against Kilpatrick looming, Schaefer and I teamed up to recap the dramatic events of Kilpatrick’s rise and fall.
